The Malcolm Huckabee Backpacks Program provides weekend meals to children enrolled at several elementary schools in the City of Danville. Many students depend on the food served at school for their daily meals, and their parents may not be able to provide for them over the weekend. Children participating in the program are identified by teachers or guidance counselors as coming from a food insecure household.
Food is packed by volunteers during the week and delivered to children on Fridays, or before the students leave school for the weekend. The goal of the program is to ensure that kids come to school Monday morning fed and ready to learn. Many civic organizations, faith based groups and individual volunteers and school faculty and staff ensure that the bags are packed and delivered each week during the school year. Food for the backpacks is purchased through grant funds, individual monetary donations, and collected through special food drives.
